When I moved out West from Kansas in 1981 and found myself in the cargo end of the airline industry, I couldn’t have guessed where my journey would take me. I hadn’t been involved in the business for long when the need to service shippers in Hawaii became obvious. Being far removed from what could be considered reliable transportation—particularly when it comes to perishable items—the need for professional and dependable shipping services to the Pacific was clear. It was then I knew that I wanted move forward on my own and operate my own company. However, getting started was another matter. My ideas were initially met with rejection and skepticism. Rejection from any and all of the financial institutions from which I sought start-up capital and skepticism from nearly every one of my advisors who chalked up my quest to symptoms of a mid-life crises. Being the oldest of three siblings, you might say I am a born leader. I used all my decision making skills as well as my accounting background to set in motion a course of action and forged ahead. It took a bit of time to overcome the cultural differences that surfaced once actually working in Hawaii. Hiring locals early on definitely helped. In the early days, doing whatever it took as manager, salesperson, and operations director paid big dividends and the business took off. In 1998, I sold a very successful, profitable business and set off to enjoy what would turn out to be a very short lived retirement. After a couple of years, the company that purchased my business ended up failing and I was immediately contacted by my former customers seeking the quality cargo services to which they had come to rely. I was able to recruit some of my previous staff and Pacific Air Cargo was launched in the year 2000. I am proud to be a woman in the transportation management industry. In the past 15 years, more and more women have found their way into this business. Whether it’s the softer touch, attention to detail or concern for employees and customers, many women have found success in this once male-dominated industry. I take an active role in the organizations that promote women in our business and support their personal growth. Thank you for visiting our Web site and your interest in Pacific Air Cargo. Aloha,
Beti Ward Chief Executive Officer, Pacific Air Cargo |
